The Fluorescent Array-based Sensing Technology (FAST) is a portable “chemical-nose” system designed for rapid detection of citrus pathogens directly at customs inspection points. The device uses organic fluorescent probes that bind selectively to microorganisms such as Phyllosticta citricarpa and Candidatus Liberibacter spp., producing unique optical signatures that can be captured and analyzed using a smartphone. The approach is non-invasive, requires minimal sample preparation, and delivers actionable results within minutes — enabling inspectors to screen fruit quickly without destructive laboratory procedures.
To ensure high accuracy under real-world conditions, EmergeNOW enhances probe sensitivity, stability, and resistance to environmental variations. Functionalized carbon-dot nanomaterials and selective binding chemistries minimize cross-reactions and false positives, while machine-learning software interprets complex fluorescence patterns automatically. This integrated system — combining a compact sensor array, high-resolution smartphone imaging and real-time data analytics — supports on-site identification of CBS and HLB symptoms, even when visual signs are unclear. Field validation in biosecure facilities and simulated customs environments will ensure robust performance, making FAST a reliable, easy-to-use tool for border phytosanitary control.
